Beautiful 11-day-old Lillian was the first appointment I had in the cities and it was a fabulous start! I definitely had a 'breakthrough' when it comes to newborns, and as I wrote in another blog, I will re-post it here:
The most challenging and rewarding subjects to photograph are newborn
babies. It took me a long time to finally figure out how to get those
shots I had only before seen in magazines or done by famous
photographers. I had no idea the tricks they used to pose or what magic
wand they had that would set these tiny beings to that perfect sleepy
status that would allow for daring poses with dramatic light--a
sleeping infant in her father's own two hands. I finally realized it wasn't one special trick in particular that made
moments like this happen. It was merely patience. That quiet,
unhurried, calm, waiting, sitting, holding-your-breath kind of patience
until that last eyelid fluttered shut and the moment was there. It may
have taken just a few minutes, or it could have taken an hour. Even
two. But the moment comes, and just as you have been patient enough to
wait for it, the reward arrives. And it's right there in front of you.
And it's so completely worth it.
